What the Tour Covers

What You Will See on a Guided Tour

Tours depart from the RiverVail Ranch office and follow a mainly flat route through the pastures. Along the way your guide will share the story of the ranch, point out wildlife, and bring you to the animal viewing area where you may catch a glimpse of the bison, elk, and red stag herds.

The Bison and Elk Herds

RiverVail Ranch has been raising bison in northern New Hampshire since 1995, starting with a small herd on 600 acres. Today the ranch manages bison, elk, and red stag across more than 1,000 acres, raised sustainably with minimal human intervention. Seeing these animals roaming open pastures in northern New Hampshire is genuinely unlike anything else in the region.

The Land

The tour route passes through open pastures, skirts the edge of dense woodlands, and covers a cross-section of the property’s terrain. Your guide will point out Clear Stream, the pond locations, and the habitat management that makes the land productive for both wildlife and upland bird hunting.

The Ranch Story

Over 30 years of history are woven into this property. Your guide will share how two farms — the Isley Dairy Farm and the Damm property — were combined into the preserve it is today, and what it takes to sustainably manage bison and elk in northern New Hampshire through all four seasons.

Who the Tours Are For
Guided Tours for Families, Groups, and Corporate Teams
Families

Children are fascinated by bison. The guided tour is one of the most memorable family activities in the Errol and Dixville Notch area. The flat terrain is accessible for kids who can walk a mile. The 75-minute length is manageable for younger visitors, and the wildlife stops keep things engaging throughout.

Corporate Groups

Looking for something beyond the typical corporate outing? A guided tour of a working bison and elk preserve in northern New Hampshire is a conversation starter that no one forgets. Combine the tour with a pheasant hunt, a tower shoot, and lunch at the Roost Clubhouse for a full-day corporate experience. Contact us to build a custom group program.

Visitors to the Errol and Dixville Notch Area

If you are visiting the Androscoggin River, Lake Umbagog, or the surrounding area, a guided tour at RiverVail Ranch is one of the most distinctive half-day activities in northern New Hampshire. The ranch is within a short drive of all major northern NH destinations.

Photography and Nature Enthusiasts

The combination of open pastures, bison and elk herds, Clear Stream, and 1,000 acres of managed land makes RiverVail Ranch exceptional for nature photography. Bring your camera — light in the open pastures is particularly good in the early morning.
